The "Angel of
Bordeaux":
Aristedes
Mendes,
Portuguese
Ambassador to France During The
War.
Forbidden
by his government to issue visas to Jews;
he issued 10,000 visas in Bordeaux before being
recalled to Portugal. There he was stripped of his
rank and ostracized; in 1954 he died in a pauper's
hospital.
